Bitty’s (Dresden/PE Columnist) van and trailer (containing a guitar and bass rig) were stolen last night outside of the Deviated Instinct / Dresden show at Now That’s Class in Cleveland, OH. Both bands were traveling in the vehicle. Everybody is safe. The cops recovered the van earlier today. All gear and personal items that were in the van are gone and there was damage done to the dash board and trailer. The bands regret to inform you that they will not be making it to the show in Detroit tonight but do plan to finish out the tour in Chicago and Minneapolis. Then Deviated Instinct will fly out to play Chaos In Tejas. Bitty and the band are out thousands of dollars in damages, lost gear and personal items. From sacred grounds do these dudes come. Yes, from the birth place of BLACK SABBATH and JUDAS PRIEST comes SCARRED SOCIETY. Calling Birmingham England home is about the only thing these guys have in common with the aforementioned bands. SCARRED SOCIETY plays straight up hardcore punk that borrows slightly from the world of metal but really can’t be considered a metal/punk band and certainly cannot be tagged with the “crossover” tag. They are too far entrenched in the punk rock camp for that tag to stick even though they do remind me of the EXPLOITED (with far more intelligent and thought out lyrics) at times. They abrasive punk rock assault might bring to mind a slightly less spastic TOXIC NARCOTIC or maybe even the PIST. Bill from TN is the fucking ‘A’ master of rhyming lyrics but this dude Paul from SCARED SOCIETY is no slacker! He gets in there and gets shit done. The anger and frustration with this whole fucking mess that we are all wrapped up in comes through as he spits out every single word. And I mean “spits”. He’s spitting mad! I bet he gets the mic all slimey and shit so that the bands after them at a gig are grossed out by it! LOL! I can just see the spit flying! The whole ordeal with the dude from NEUROSIS doing the Scion thing caused quite a stir. Most of us are very protective our culture and our scene and when we feel like someone only used our DIY culture as a stepping stone we take offense. The song ‘Corp-Core’ tackles the subject of using DIY as a spring board. Sure maybe you’ll sell a few more records and get your message out there (Isn’t that what those bands always say? They want to reach a wider audience…) but you’ll do so while selling your soul and turning your back on the very people that got you to where you are. We saw a lot of that in the 90’s didn’t we? Debt is the modern slavery designed for ensnaring the poor and debt collectors are a sick bi-product existing only to harass the common and man and degrade them. An interesting song topic that SCARRED SOCIETY dives into with the song ‘Chain of Debt’. The album cover is kind of EXPLOITEDish even with some punk zombies eating some poor fucker…Pretty cool…I like it, these guys pass the acid test. Check’ em out! (JoshMosh)

Finding this 7” in the mailbox was quite a nice surprise, since this is
the first I’ve heard of them after reviewing their CD What Remains a few
issues back. It would seem that they’ve hit their stride with their own
style of epic crusty thrash laced up with haunting melodies. While this is
still intensely fierce, there is a cohesion that is most likely the result
of time and experience that sets this release ahead. The writing seems to
have matured a bit and Sunrise in Ashes is perfect example. The song kicks
off with short bursts of guitar paired with desperate howls of “This must
be stopped. All this must crumble.”, then a quick tap on the snare and the
entire band bursts in with blasting fury and dissonant chords, then
repeat, but with the next lyric. They manage to build up a tremendous
amount of anticipation in just a few short seconds that could have easily
been wasted had the structure not been set up perfectly. Each of the four
songs has been written much more thoughtfully this time around creating
the perfect atmosphere to deliver their demands to everyone to get our
shit together as a species so that we might slow the damage we’re doing to
the planet and subsequently each other. I almost want to call it
apocalyptic post-crust. Is that even a thing? (Jake)

Neurosis interview by Flox ( Fight For Your Mind ) Answers by Steve Von Till.
Originally printed in Sedition Magazine France, reposted with permission.
PE: After 27 years Neurosis is releasing a new album in 2012. Can you let us know what to expect from this new comer ? Will it be the soundtrack to the end of the world ?
Steve: Like every new work we embark on, it is the next step in our evolution, the next bend in our path. You can expect it to be honest, emotional, heavy, and beautiful. We are extremely proud and happy with the way the music has guided us. It explores some new sonic territory for us. Some of the ways we are approaching our heavy riffing is new and challenging, the keyboard sounds are really amazing and powerful and Jason is always blowing us away with his rhythms.
PE: Throughout the years Neurosis has evolved from an anarcho punk background going to a much more metallic post hardcore and experimental outlet. Have you found yourselves evolving alot through musical and life experiences that have made you trespass certain boundries to creat your own monster ?
Steve: To us, the freedom we discovered in our early days of what was called “punk” or independent DIY music back then meant there were no rules. We do what we want and what moves and inspires us. If you don’t like it, tough shit, you don’t have to listen to it then. This is completely self centered expression. We don’t cater to anyone’s expectations. We carry that initial inspiration with us always. We have never fit in a box or category and those names people try to give music are completely meaningless to us. We have outlasted most names, scenes, and categories and I am sure we will outlast all of the current terminology as well. We evolve as human beings expressing ourselves through music.
PE: Of course all of your records have a very deeply anchored philosophy and art! These two aspects of the band as well with live performances have made Neurosis a very unique combo and an influential band worldwide. How does all of this come together ? Where do you draw your inspiration from to make all of these aspects come together to make masterpieces ? Are you all pretty much perfectionnists ?
Steve: We are definitely not perfectionists. This music is very organic and comes from the soul. We don’t labor over it intellectually. There is no such thing as “perfect”. I think when people obsess on trying to reach perfection they often sterilize any real emotion and humanity right out of their art. Any ideas that may come from our brains are inherently less powerful than the natural flow that shines when we surrender to that driven force that exists both outside and within us. We record in a pure manner, live as a band straight to tape, no tricks, no bullshit. The philosophy is the philosophy of being emotional beings contemplating our existence. The artwork tries to give a visual backdrop for the emotional landscapes created by the music. It is hard to describe with words. That is why we use sound.

Profane Existence is proud to announce that we will be realeasing the new WAR//PLAGUE LP. Minneapolis punk veterans War//Plague return with their debut full length album “On A Darker Dawn”. This album brings forth over 2 years of socio/political rage and ferocity that is unleashed into a culmination of metallic fury. On a Darker Dawn is the bands defining pinnacle, both musically and lyrically. Coming from previous bands such as Provoked, Calloused and Pontius Pilate. These Minneapolis punks know their roots and the underbelly of the DIY movement has fueled them since day one. With the bands driving and aggressive guitars, barrage of brutal drum convergence, and vocal war cries, this album brings all their years of punk and rage into an apex of brutality. Due out Summer 2012. Stay tuned!
This is the fucking shit yo! Man…I love being surprised and excited by the stuff in my review pile and this is definitely one of those times where I become a fan of a band discovered in the review stack. Starting with the black and white art work (complete with a chaos symbol, a skull, fists and barbed wire) you know in general what sub-genre this band might roll up under. What we have here my black clad friends is a full blown exercise in badassery. NEH play supercharged D-Beat leaning into the underworld of metallic crust. At times the guitar even burns through the riffs with a bit of a thrash metal vibe before exploding into a searing lead. As the disc progresses I can’t help but to hear some EXTINCTION of MANKIND in the mix or even HELLKRUSHER rounded out with the explosiveness of WB2D. I think you get the idea. Lyrically they protest the rich and injustices of the work but also offer hope and encouragement with songs like ‘Save the World’ and ‘Strive to Survive’. I find both songs to be a breath of fresh air against the stark background of what is typically all doom and gloom. They scream out in a call to action and ask the listener to take get off their ass and take a stand! Damn right! The Swedes have always known how to D-Beat/Hardcore punk right and this is obviously not an exception. Mixed and recorded last fall the production of this album is perfect, they achieved a thick and powerful sound without sacrificing any of the rawness that is so essential. I don’t know if it was released on vinyl or not, but I am sure if was the vinyl sounds su-fucking-perb! I really can’t say enough good things about this disc, it is certainly worth seeking out. (JoshMosh)

I saw these dudes a couple of years ago and I have to say I wasn’t particularly impressed. Their live performance left a bit to be desired. Maybe they were hung-over, maybe they were tired…Who knows…But the more important question is who cares?! Because this record kicks fucking arse! First off it’s Gabba from CHAOS UK and that is about as good a starting place as any. In fact that is the best place to start and also a great reference point because…dude, they sound a helluva lot like CHAOS UK and the ‘Chipping Sodbury Bonfires Tapes’ to be exact. They have the same buzz saw sound and are punk as fuck. I mean this is everything you think punk is supposed to be when you are young and just learning about all things punky. It’s fast, it’s loud, it’s obnoxious and it’s offensive. It’s like if the SEX PISTOLS were a real band made up of real punks. There is no metal to be heard in the grooves of this platter, there is no crust, they is no BS…Just straight forward UK punk rock! This is a 13 song, 12” 45 on clear vinyl. Shit! Even that is punk as fuck! They all have cool names like Gabba, Glueboy, Cliff Vicious and Hedgepig. Punk! The distro logo on the sleeve has a parrot with a mow-hawk sitting on a safety-pin. Punk! The name of the band is FUK! Super punk! It’s punk done as only the Brits can do it and in case I haven’t said “punk” enough throughout this review here is one more: PUNK! (JoshMosh)

On May 28, Kelly Pflug-Back will stand in front of a Toronto courtroom to be sentenced.
I first met Kelly when she was a 16 yr old traveler kid who had just arrived in Victoria. We hung out on the streets, at drop in centers, and did Food not Bombs together which developed a lasting friendship. Over the years Kelly became quite the well known community organizer and activist. So it was a surprise when her picture went out across the internet, TV news, and newspapers last year following the G20 as police released pictures of their most wanted suspects in their sweep of 1100 activists who arrested, most of which would be released with no charges.
This interview was conducted by email.
PE: You have been active in community organizing for many years preceding this arrest? Can you tell us a bit about how you became involved in the struggle and what types of organizing or activism you have done?
KELLY: I’ve always been most interested in long-term, sustained efforts to build networks of social support so that people don’t have to rely on the state. I’ve done a lot of work with Food Not Bombs in a few cities, worked with needle exchange programs and anti-stigma AIDS resource centres, and facilitated workshops for queer youth and street-involved youth on self-esteem, safer drug use and sexual health. I’ve also participated in a couple of land occupations opposing developments on Indigenous territories, and I’ve recently been doing a lot of journalism for magazines.
PE: What were the charges you are about to be sentenced for and what are they supposedly in relation to?
KELLY: I’m being convicted of six counts of mischief over $ 5000, as well as one count of being masked with the intent of committing a crime. When the G20 economic summit was held in Toronto in 2010 I participated in corporate property damage. For folks who don’t know much about the G20, it stands for “Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors.” They are essentially the leaders of the world’s most powerful national economies, and they meet in different cities periodically, spending billions of dollars on security and luxuries every time. They make decisions geared toward enhancing the economic power of elite nations while continuing to impoverish the global South. These meetings exclude anyone from the exploited nations which the G20 derive much of their wealth and resources from. They also exclude any input from Indigenous groups that many G20 countries, like Canada, have robbed of their traditional lands in order to establish their nationhood.
PE: You were also charged initially with a few other charges; can you speak about those and how/why they were dropped?
KELLY: I initially had charges of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, as well as assaulting a police officer with a weapon, obstructing justice and intimidation of a justice system participant. I never assaulted a police officer, and there was no evidence to suggest I did. The guy who they were saying I assaulted testified in court that he had never seen me before, a year after the charges were laid. The conspiracy charge didn’t stick because they were unable to associate me with any co-conspirators…they were trying to frame it as though I was a conspiracy of one person. This is a good example of what people mean when they say “trumped up charges.” A person can be slapped with serious or violent charges as a way of intimidating them, strong-arming them into a plea agreement or justifying harsh punitive measures such as restrictive bail conditions. The assault charge was a convenient excuse for them to keep me on house arrest for a year.
